Discovery Sydney’s newest market experience.
Social initiative to showcase local produce and local talent
Sydney’s newest market experience is coming to Frasers Property Australia’s Discovery Point community in Wolli Creek. With a distinct local vibe designed to bring the community together, Discovery Markets will feature an eclectic mix of stalls and provide a forum for local artists and musicians to showcase their talents.
Kicking off on Saturday September 17, Discovery Markets will be held next to Tempe House on the first and third Saturdays of each month, starting at 9am and running through till 3pm.
The markets will include a range of quality stalls including some of Sydney’s best known market operators: Hopper Kade, Bush Sydney, O!momo, Dessert Makers, Bar Pho, Brooklyn Boy Bagels, Arepas Australia and Birgitta's (all TBC).
The initiative will also provide an important outlet for local artists to create or sell their works, while local musicians will be engaged to perform acoustic outdoor sets. Discovery Markets will be a valuable support to local artisans and producers, enabling community organisations to connect with local residents and enrich the urban character of the area.
Nigel Edgar, Frasers Property Australia, says the initiative adds another dimension to the blossoming Discovery Point community.
“With more and more residents calling Discovery Point home, we’re focused on ensuring the community itself grows and evolves to foster a unique identity. We’ve recently launched the Live Life Get Active free fitness camp at Discovery Point, and now the Discovery Markets provide another immersive social experience,” Mr Edgar says.
“Discovery Point residents don’t simply purchase a property, they inherit a new community, and social experiences like Discovery Markets strengthen the connection our residents feel between their home, their neighbours and their surrounds,” Mr Edgar says.
Initially, Discovery Markets will showcase a variety of stalls including premium food, fresh produce, artisan products, homewares, fresh flowers, locally made items, contemporary art, fashion and jewellery stalls. The number of stalls will hopefully swell to 50 as Discovery Markets becomes a local institution for residents and visitors every fortnight.
“At Discovery Point, residents have at their doorstep immaculately restored heritage buildings and beautiful heritage listed grounds. Discovery Markets will accentuate these exceptional community assets while providing a unique forum for local artists and musicians to showcase their talents,” Mr Edgar says.
A community herb garden is planned adjacent to St Magdalen’s Chapel, while this Saturday five artists will transform a 20 metre canvas in front of onlookers’ eyes. A cooking exhibition from Vive Cooking School and a workshop demonstration by Work Shop Australia will keep the adults entertained while the kids enjoy the face painting, balloons and jumping castle. The puppy petting zoo is sure to be a hit with the littlies – and the big kids as well.
Supporting the social sustainability of the Discovery Point community, Frasers Property plans to facilitate a share of the market profits to be returned to the community via the Discovery Point Co-Operative.
Discovery Point was recently recognised as the state’s premier mixed-use development, winning the Mixed-Use Development Award at the 2016 Urban Development Institute of Australia (UDIA) NSW Awards for Excellence.
