Mouth-watering recipes offer a glimpse of community’s diversity

A new cookbook featuring an array of mouth-watering recipes has been created to reflect the cultural background of residents at the Frasers Property Australia masterplanned community at Fairwater, Blacktown.
The recipes included in “Fairwater Foodies Cookbook – Recipes from our Fairwater Residents” are as diverse as the residents that call Fairwater home. There is an Indian-inspired Chicken Biryani with Tuna Fishcake, Malaysian Chicken Curry, Chinese Spring Rolls and the Greek dish Moussaka alongside Chicken Drumsticks, Macaroni Pasta with Vegetables, Moroccan Lamb Stew and even a Christmas Pudding and Custard – a recipe passed down from descendants of the First Fleet.
Blacktown has one of the most culturally diverse populations in Australia. Its 350,000 residents derive from 188 birthplaces and speak 182 different languages, according to Blacktown City Council.
And nowhere is this diversity more evident than at Fairwater, says Raymond Baksmati, Development Director, Frasers Property Australia.
Mr Baksmati says Fairwater is a community of many flavours and the idea for the cookbook came about following the success of an annual event held at Fairwater, the ‘Foodies in July’ night.
Last year’s event saw about 70 residents and guests come together at the Fairwater Sales Centre for a home-cooked meal with a difference.
“Identifying and mobilising community talents to bring people together is core to Frasers Property’s community development program and cooking is certainly a talent in the Fairwater community,” says Mr Baksmati.
Residents were invited to bring along a dish to share that captured the food and culture of their homeland. The resulting feast included an array of curry dishes, Afghani cuisines, vegetarian options, Zimbabwean sausages, salads, puddings, galaktoboureko and more.
“Each resident who brought in a dish told us what it meant to them, the ingredients that went into it and how the meal was created,” says Mr Baksmati.
“Residents also entered their recipes into a competition to choose the Most Awesome Dish and the Best Kids Meal.”
Mr Baksmati says residents were invited on the night to submit their recipes for inclusion in the cookbook and the resulting cookbook is a celebration of the vibrant community.
“Showcasing the diversity and good taste of this close-knit community, the cookbook is full of the dishes that regularly bring our residents together at community events,” says Mr Baksmati.
“For me, one of the best parts of living in a multicultural city like Sydney is the discovery of new and amazing dishes from different parts of the world. Here at Fairwater, we have residents with a diverse range of backgrounds, reflecting the modern face and flavours of Australia, and each recipe has a special meaning for our residents.”
Fairwater resident Nicole Yee had to be persuaded to enter her spicy Singaporean dish in the competition and was surprised when it was awarded “Most Awesome Dish”. Her Shandong Beef recipe simply had to be included in the cookbook.
“I was very lucky that the judges enjoyed the dish I presented to them on Foodies Night,” says Nicole.
Also featured in the cookbook is the Easy Asian Noodles dish that won the “Best Kids Meal” category for the Crider family.
A cookbook has been delivered to all of the households at Fairwater and will be included in the welcome pack given to new residents moving in.
Fairwater is set on a 38 hectare former golf course and features more than nine hectares of open space and picturesque surrounds, including lakes and ponds, boardwalks, walkways and pramways, a playground, play area and learn-to-ride bike track, all just 1km from Blacktown CBD and railway station.
A wide variety of homes to suit all budgets are available at Fairwater, including a two-bedroom terrace-style home for $668,000 and two-bedroom townhomes starting from $675,000. Three-bedroom townhomes are priced from $732,000 while family-sized four-bedroom townhomes are for sale from $799,000.
