Building a new home? Find out what's hot in interior design!

So, you’re building a brand-new home. You’ve chosen your block and your builder. Made all the big decisions around the design, the elevation, the floorplan and the building materials.. You’ve made a lot of big decisions.

Now comes the fun part - designing the interior! But where to start? Some people have an innate sense of their own style and can seem to effortlessly pull a look together, but most of us resort to browsing magazines and websites to find inspiration.

Design trends are ever-changing, and what was popular just a few years ago - or even last year! -might be passé today. The key is to stay true to your own sensibilities and preferences, after all, you are the one that will be living with your chosen colour scheme. Your intuition should tell you what you can and can’t live with. Having said that, nobody wants to be yesterday’s hero, so for some truly up-to-the-minutes design inspiration, we’ve gathered together some of the latest trends for 2023, from paint colours to interior décor.

COLOUR

Choosing your colour scheme is probably the most important decision. While neutrals never really go out of style, various shades of grey that have been popular for quite a few years are now becoming dated, with trends moving towards jewel tones and rich earth tones, from walls to fabrics to accessories. If you enjoy eye-catching colours – vibrant blue hues, sea green, terracotta - you can feel confident in incorporating them into your new colour scheme!

Dulux Paint has released three beautiful colour palettes for 2023 - Balance, Connect and Revive. Which are you?

Balance is all about harmony, and features oceanic hues like soft greens, sea kelp teals and blues, and pearly seashell lustres and pastels designed to have a calming effect that washes over you.

The Connect palette is soft earthy neutrals and naturals like warm cinnamon browns, muted greens and wheat yellows, to connect with the beauty of nature.

By contrast, Revive is joyful - soft blue and lilac against vibrant emerald green, warm yellows, pink and purple. It breaks free from past (grey) restraints and combines colour and pattern in a clash of modern and revived styles, from the 50s through to the 80s. So it’s out with the old design rules and in with personal expression!

DECOR

In 2023, the way we combine pieces is set to change. Rather than having an entire space or room following the same style, mixing it up is the way to go. Don’t be afraid to experiment and combine styles and periods, drawing inspiration from your favourite places and times. Why not try ‘enmasse’, a way of gathering together everyday items like books, candles, foliage or flowers for a dramatic massed effect.

If all this sounds a step too far, some simple décor themes are timeless and classic. For instance, blue and white never goes out of style, and works especially in our laidback coastal lifestyle.

What else for 2023?

Geometric patterns are making a big comeback in home décor in 2023. Look for bold, graphic prints in furniture upholstery, wallpaper, rugs, and more. Light fixtures are no longer just utilitarian; they're becoming works of art in their own right. So consider statement lighting fixtures like chandeliers, pendant lights, and floor lamps.

Vintage pieces with history and character are becoming increasingly popular, as is the global effect - bright Moroccan tiles, or colourful Indian textiles and décor. The goal is to create a space that feels unique and exotic. This trend is perfect for those who love to travel or who want to bring a little bit of the world into their home.
