How to choose the right community for you

Whether you’re looking at building your own home in a new community, or apartment living is more your style, deciding on a development can really dictate how you’ll live. Before you sign on the dotted line, use our handy checklist to make sure you’ve decided what’s best for you.

1. Draft your wish list

Is being close to a primary school important? What about aged care? Would you rather live near water or close to a park? And how about access to public transport and sporting grounds? Do you want the buzz that comes from living in a vibrant city, or is a quieter, more connected village-style community more your speed?

2. Don’t just rely on internet research and real estate sites

Go out and spend time in the area. Visit the parks and playgrounds. Drop into one of the local cafes and talk to the owner about the community. Check out the local paper to get a sense of what people are interested in locally. Talk to some residents and find out what they like about living there.

3. Birds of a feather

It’s really important to feel like you can make friends and create social bonds in the place that you live. Do the people in your preferred community have similar goals and aspirations? Will they make good neighbours? This can be a bit subjective, but one great way to find out is to go to a community open day and meet the people that might one day become your friends!

4. Culture, entertainment, lifestyle

Discovery Point

Infrastructure like roads, hospitals and transport is crucial, but so is your wellbeing. Does your new community have places you can go to get a meal, meet for coffee, enjoy a movie or a local band? Think about what you like to do on the weekend and then think about whether you can do that nearby or if you’re going to have to travel a long distance.

5. Developer credibility

If you’re about to hand over your hard- earned money on a new home, make sure you’re handing it to someone you can trust. Does the developer have a good track record of successfully delivering what they say they will? How long have they been in business? How many residential projects have they successfully completed? Are they recognised and rewarded by their industry peers?
