Wine in the Macedon Ranges

Macedon Ranges is the coolest wine growing region in Australia, and is one of the cooler regions in the world. It’s mostly known for producing chardonnay, sparkling wines and pinot noir.

This region truly has something for every wine drinker.

Many of the growers and producers run boutique and family-owned vineyards, using age-old techniques to create wine that will delight the sommelier in you.

Macedon Ranges is only a short 30 minute drive from Wallan’s shops in the centre of town, meaning that you will have a treasure trove of fantastic wineries right on your doorstep.

Mount William Winery

Mount William Winery is a family-owned and run winery only a short 30 minute drive from Wallan’s shopping centre.

Adrienne and Murray Cousins bought this winery back in 1985 as a grazing property for sheep and Angus cattle. It wasn’t until 1987 that they got the ideas to start growing grapes and producing their own wines here.

Visitors will love the homely feeling of the bar and sampling all the exquisite wines the Cousins have on offer. Enjoy a glass of their award-winning blanc de blanc and charcuterie by soaking up the sun on warm summer days, or tucked into the cozy bar on crispy winter afternoons.

Mount William Winery also has a cottage, making this great local winery the perfect place for a romantic weekend away.

Cleveland Winery

Cleveland Winery is a little slice of paradise that feels like a luxury European estate, despite being less than a half-hour drive from the Wallan shopping centre.

Cleveland Winery is the only winery to boast an underground cellar in the Macedon Ranges. When it was initially built in 1984, it was used for storing barrels, but has now been opened up to the public as a bar and private event space.

Wine tastings in the Cleveland Winery cellar are a one of a kind experience that you'll always remember.

Enjoy a glass of wine from their very own vineyard on the deck while you soak in the uninterrupted views of the countryside. In summer, Cleveland Winery has been known to put on delectable wood fired pizzas, European lawn boules and even open up their doors to the family dog

At Cleveland Winery, there really is something for the whole family.

Craiglee Vineyard

Over the last 40 years, the Carmody family has been working hard to craft beautiful wines and earn themselves a reputation as one of the best growers of Shiraz and Chardonnay in Australia.

The Craiglee history stretches all the way back to 1863, when James Stewart Johnston of the Victorian Parliament first planted vines here. The shiraz and riesling grown here proved to be incredibly popular until the winery was shut in the 1920s.

Pat Carmody took over his family farm in the 70s and started growing vines again. The cold climate of the area meant that Pat and his wife Dianne began producing one of a kind wines. They have since won numerous Gold Medals from the Melbourne Wine Show and are named in the Top 100 Shiraz producers.

Craiglee Vineyard offers tastings on the first Sunday of every month, providing a unique way to experience some of the finest wines in the region, and some of the best shiraz in the country.

Come and enjoy a glass from their award winning range of pinot noirs and chardonnays. Spend a night in their luxury accommodation or book a function for birthdays, weddings and all of life’s other special events.

They also boast the Contemporary Arts Centre which was founded in 2006 to support the arts in Victoria. You’re free to enjoy a stroll through the gallery after lunch and maybe even see the occasional recital, if you’re lucky.

Have we mentioned they host social cricket events in their own cricket oval and pavilion?
