Five Picnic Spots to Visit in South-West Sydney.

01 November 2022

Flowers blooming, birds singing, warmer weather and later sunsets. That’s spring calling! If there was ever a time to dust off your picnic blankets and crack out those reusable cutlery sets, it’s now.

From secluded riverside reserves to family-friendly parks, South-West Sydney has no shortage of places to soak up the fresh air. Rally your mates, pack a picnic basket and plan your next big day out.

1. Simmo’s Beach Reserve, Macquarie Fields
One of South-West Sydney’s best-kept secrets, Simmo’s Beach, is the perfect spot for a peaceful picnic with family and friends. It’s been a local favourite for generations and lies on the Georges River, offering both beautiful bushland and well-equipped picnic facilities.

Enjoy a packed lunch on the white sands or use the outback barbecue and picnic tables, located near the main car park. There’s also a children’s playground and a string of walking trails for post-picnic adventures.

3. Casula Parklands, Casula
Play and picnic all weekend long at Liverpool City Council’s most exciting adventure playground, Casula Parklands. The inclusive play equipment has something for all ages and abilities, including a ninja training circuit for adults, an eight-metre-high Sky Walk and tunnel slide for older kids and dual flying foxes for the little ones.

When the fun and excitement get too much, you can relax under one of the shaded picnic shelters for an al fresco feast. PS: The park is dog-friendly so your four-legged pals can come along for the ride.

4. Lizard Log Park, Western Sydney Parklands
In the picturesque bushland setting of Western Sydney Parklands is Lizard Log Park, an all-in-one hot spot with coffee, a playground, barbecues and scenic walks. The shaded picnic shelters are ideal to host large family gatherings of up to 100 people (60 seated, 40 standing) and you can book some in advance. There are also 24 electric barbecues and 10 coal barbecue stations available to use, free of charge.

Whilst the sausages are sizzling, kids can splash around in the water play deck, enjoy the nature-themed playground, cycle along the 1.6km Pimelea Loop or grab a snack from Saluti Café by Novella. Pack your bags and let the adventure begin.

5. Woodland Picnic Area, Mount Annan
If you’re all about tranquillity and a little bit of seclusion, then Woodland Picnic Area is your next picnic destination. Situated on the edges of the endangered Cumberland Plain Woodland, just off the Narellan Road entry gate, this hidden gem is ideal for solo picnic dates or laid-back family outings.

There is ample grassy space to spread out those tartan blankets, lounge in the sun or play games. There are also picnic tables for large groups to rent but the Park recommends bringing your own gas BBQ. Rate cards for hire are found on the Australian Botanic Garden website.
