Hathaway Reserve Officially Opens in Baldivis Grove
On Saturday 16 May, the Baldivis Grove community came together to celebrate the official opening of Hathaway Reserve - a vibrant new community space shaped through collaboration, cultural respect and connection to Country.
Held between 10am and 1pm, the event welcomed local residents, families and project partners to experience the new park through live music, family-friendly activities, cultural storytelling and community connection.
The opening of Hathaway Reserve completes the Stage 9 Public Open Space (POS) and further unifies the central parkland corridor running through the heart of Baldivis Grove, creating another important place for residents to connect, relax and enjoy the outdoors together.
The celebration commenced with live performances from Indigo Ellis and Jarran Cobb, before guests gathered for a Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony led by Nick Abraham. The moving cultural experience acknowledged the significance of Country and the importance of creating places that honour Aboriginal heritage and stories.
Guests also heard from representatives involved in bringing Hathaway Reserve to life, including Sarah Strongylos from Frasers Property Australia, contemporary Aboriginal artist Hayley Thompson, sculptural artist Rohin Kickett and Bruce Jorgensen from Gnaala Karla Booja Aboriginal Corporation.
Working in partnership with Gnaala Karla Booja Aboriginal Corporation, Hathaway Reserve has been thoughtfully designed to celebrate culture, storytelling and belonging. Hayley Thompson developed a digital artwork package featured throughout the park via concrete etching, perforated shelter panels and interpretive signage, while Rohin Kickett and Matthew McVeigh created the striking “Kaya Mate” sculpture at the park entrance alongside a series of large-scale native bird sculptures.
Throughout the day, families enjoyed complimentary food, coffee and ice cream, explored the parklands and joined a guided artwork tour led by Hayley Thompson.
More than just a new park, Hathaway Reserve represents a shared commitment to creating stronger, more connected neighbourhoods where community and culture can thrive together.
