  • The Ison Road Project in Werribee will open in September, featuring a new rail overpass and 1.3km fourlane road linking Ison Road to Geelong Road and the Princes Freeway.
  • The project also includes new walking and cycling paths, will enable removal of the nearby Galvin Road level crossing, and is jointly funded by federal, state and local governments to support Wyndham’s growing community.

Werribee is set to gain a major thoroughfare, with the Ison Road Project scheduled to open in September.

A new overpass across the Melbourne–Geelong rail line will link to a 1.3 kilometre, four-lane road connecting Ison Road to Geelong Road and the Princes Freeway interchange at Werribee.

According to the state government, more than 29,000 daily journeys are expected to occur on the new link by 2036, which is designed to alleviate congestion from local roads.

New walking and cycling paths will run along the overpass and underneath the bridge, with additional connections along the extension to Geelong Road.

While the road will open in September, finishing works including landscaping, lighting and final asphalting will continue through to the end of 2026.

Once open, the project will support the removal of the nearby Galvin Road level crossing, which is expected to improve safety for the 10,350 vehicles that use it each day.

The project is jointly funded by the federal and state governments, and Wyndham council.

Werribee MP John Lister explained how it would directly benefit commuters.

“We are constrained because we cannot widen Synnot Street, so there will be many benefits and time savings by using Ison Road to get to places like Harpley and Mambourin,” he said.

“We have signalised intersections all the way through which means it is more efficient and safe for people as well.”

Transport Infrastructure Minister Gabrielle Williams said it was a critical project to expedite.

“Everything we do in Melbourne’s west is about meeting the demand for growth,” she said.

Lalor MP Joanne Ryan said the need for it has only grown since federal funding had been committed.

Wyndham chief executive Stephen Wall added that the upgrade is a major step forward for Wyndham, helping to ease pressure on local roads while supporting the needs of the fast-growing community.
