The much-anticipated Ison Road connection will finally open to Werribee motorists on September 4, creating a new route to the Princes Freeway.

The $194 million project extends Ison Road over the Melbourne-Geelong rail line and through to Geelong Road and the Princes Freeway interchange.

It means motorists will be able to travel along the new 1.3-kilometre, four-lane connection rather than Ison Road ending on the western side of the rail line.

The project includes a $114 million bridge jointly funded by the federal and Victorian governments, while Wyndham City Council funded the $80 million Ison Road extension.

The state and federal governments say the road is opening three months ahead of schedule and expect more than 29,000 journeys a day to use the new link by 2036.

Motorists will also see an upgraded Geelong Road and Werribee Main Road intersection and new traffic lights, while the project includes new walking and cycling paths.

More changes are still to come, with a new intersection planned at Ison Road and Werribee Main Road and a new roundabout on the Princes Freeway city-bound off-ramp.

Landscaping, lighting and final asphalting will continue until the end of 2026.

The opening also clears the way for work to begin on removing the nearby Galvin Road level crossing, which the government says is used by more than 10,300 vehicles each day.
